What is the Cost of Living Crisis?

The ‘cost of living crisis’ refers to the fall in ‘real’ disposable incomes that the UK has experienced since late 2021. Thousands of Newham residents will face severe financial instability due to high inflation, soaring energy bills, and rising housing costs as a result of more than 12 years of austerity. Newham is an ethnically diverse borough and has a young population, which means many inhabitants are disproportionately vulnerable to structural inequalities.

Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz has announced actions in the Council's Cost of Living Crisis Summit, that directly addressed the findings of research commissioned by the Council and has already mobilised collective response to the emergency and challenge inequalities.

Warm Home Discounts for residents
A new free online tool is available to make it easier for residents to check if they are eligible for the UK government’s Warm Home Discount scheme, which provides eligible low-income and vulnerable households with a £150 discount off their energy bills. The online tool will guide residents through the eligibility criteria in England and Wales, asking questions about electricity supply, the benefits they receive and characteristics of their property. After answering the questions, residents will be told whether their property meets the high energy cost criteria.

All residents who complete the online tool will receive a letter between November and mid-January confirming their eligibility and the payment will be made automatically through energy suppliers by March 2023. The Government is also writing to recipients who may be eligible, advising them to use the tool to check eligibility, as well as using the helpline for particularly complex cases.

Information leaflets on how to cope with the cost of living can be accessed in this google drive. Feel free to distribute to your local community and wider network.
