Ramadan is a holy month observed by Muslims worldwide, during which they fast from sunrise to sunset. This means abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs during the daylight hours. It is a time of spiritual reflection, prayer, and an opportunity to increase one's devotion to God.

Fasting is a core aspect of this religious observance, but it can pose unique challenges for individuals living with diabetes. Therefore, it is essential for Muslims with diabetes to prepare themselves for Ramadan to ensure their health and wellbeing during this holy month.

For Muslims living with diabetes, it is important to take extra care when preparing for and participating in Ramadan. Fasting can have an impact on their blood sugar levels, which can lead to serious health complications if not managed correctly. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional and create a plan to manage diabetes during fasts.

In some cases, fasting may not be safe or appropriate for people with diabetes, and alternative options such as medication adjustments or partial fasting may be recommended. It is crucial to have an individualised plan in place to manage diabetes during Ramadan.

There are also potential health risks associated with fasting as it can cause fluctuations in blood sugar levels, dehydration, and other complications, which can be particularly dangerous for people with diabetes. The NHS advised it is essential to monitor blood sugar levels regularly, adjust medication doses as necessary, and stay hydrated.

Thankfully, Diabetes UK have developed resources to help Muslims living with diabetes prepare for Ramadan:

  • NHS - The NHS advises Muslims with diabetes to consult with their healthcare provider before fasting to determine whether it is safe and appropriate for them. Individuals with certain diabetes complications, such as unstable blood sugar levels, kidney disease, or heart disease, may be advised not to fast. In such cases, alternative fasting options or partial fasting may be recommended.
  • Diabetes UK - This UK-based charity provides information and support to people with diabetes. They have a comprehensive guide to managing diabetes during Ramadan, which covers topics such as adjusting medication doses, monitoring blood sugar levels, and staying hydrated.
  • British Muslim Medical Association (BMMA) - The BMMA is a UK-based organization that aims to promote the health and wellbeing of Muslims in the UK. They have a Ramadan health guide that provides advice on managing diabetes during Ramadan, along with other health conditions.
  • Newham Council - Newham is a borough in London with a large Muslim population. The council has a dedicated webpage on managing diabetes during Ramadan, which includes advice on diet, exercise, and medication. You can find their webpage on their website.
