    Newham Deaf Community Outreach Worker

    Salary: £26,000 - £28,000 per annum

    Hours: 35 hours per week (full-time)

    Contract: Fixed-term contract for 12 months

    Location: You will work in Healthwatch Newham’s Office three days per week. You will also spend two days per week at a community organisation within Newham.

    Reports to: Healthwatch Newham Manager

    Annual Leave: 28 days per annum, plus bank holidays

    Overview

    Newham is a diverse Borough with a rich, strong, and vibrant Deaf community. A Deaf Assembly was held in 2018 for Deaf residents in Newham. This looked at areas for improvement in health and social care. There has been further work to connect and engage with our Deaf residents and understand the barriers they face to health and social care.

    We wish to employ a Deaf Outreach Worker to work with the Deaf community on an action plan of delivery to make improvements across Newham. This is a fixed term contract of 12 months and you will work in partnership with the Newham health and social care system.

    You will be a Deaf person with life experience of being Deaf and Deaf culture. You will be fluent in British Sign Language (BSL) and used to working in a bilingual environment with Deaf and hearing colleagues.

    Background

    Healthwatch Newham is part of a national network, led by Healthwatch England. Healthwatch Newham aims to enable residents to contribute to the development of health and social care services. We do this through outreach, engagement and delivering projects that review quality and standards. 

    You will be employed by CB Plus. CB Plus is an award-winning charity reaching over 1 million Londoners. CB Plus provides many community services, including Young People Thrive. Healthwatch Newham is part of CB Plus.

    You will work alongside Healthwatch Newham colleagues. These colleagues are responsible for different projects covering various topics in Newham.

    Main Tasks & Responsibilities: You will build a positive and trusted relationship with Newham’s Deaf Community to:

    Connect the local Deaf community and health and social care services to look at access to these services including limitations and barriers. Understand why these happen and how they affect the Deaf community in Newham.

    Work with services and the Deaf community to identify the top FIVE things to be delivered within 12 months. For example, access to interpreters for appointments, Deaf awareness training for GPs or social care, and so on. You will create an action plan to achieve these.

    Hold events, information sessions and consultations with Newham’s Deaf community on delivering this action plan. This will include Deaf people of all ages and backgrounds.

    Work with the Deaf community to discuss and set up a Newham Deaf Resident Advisory Group.

    Offer support, advice and training to health and social care services staff to help improve the health and care of the Deaf community in Newham.

    Review how the role has worked and make recommendations for the future.

    You will have access to training, regular supervision and team meetings to enhance your skills and development. This will include spending time with teams who use BSL.

    Personal Specification:

    You will be a Deaf person with life experience and knowledge of being Deaf and Deaf culture.

    Fluent in BSL and able to communicate with a wide range of people.

    Understand or have experience of working with the Deaf community, and, knowledge of current themes / topics affecting the Deaf community.

    Have a good understanding of the Accessible Information Standard, and how it applies to health and social care.

    Experience of providing Deaf awareness training.

    Experience of setting up, supporting and participating in groups.

    Clear knowledge of Deaf Culture.

    Ability to manage expectations of different stakeholders (Deaf residents, health and social care staff, etc.)

    Able to work well in a team.

    Knowledge and experience of working with Sign Language interpreters.

    Understanding of the issues of working with other sign languages.

    Any Other Duties:

    Take part in internal meetings, and, represent CB Plus at external meetings and events as appropriate.

    Able to manage and produce your own emails, spreadsheets and other general administration.

    Undertake continuous professional development and training where required.

    Adhere to all CB Plus’s policies and working processes. This includes confidentiality, health and safety, complaints and codes of conduct.

    Undertake any duties as appropriate and as requested by the CEO.

    Safeguarding Responsibilities

    The contract of employment is subject to a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service.

    When you start work, you will undertake safeguarding training.

    Data Protection Responsibilities:

    You will follow all relevant data protection legislation. You will also follow any CB Plus policy on data protection when processing personal data. This will include personal data relating to any Deaf resident of Newham, employee, supplier or agent of CB Plus.

    Access to Work:

    CB Plus will support the successful candidate’s application to the Access to Work Scheme.

    Some evening work will be required and there may be some weekend work.

    Pension: CB Plus will make a pension contribution into a workplace pension scheme.

    Based at: Healthwatch Newham, Bizniz Point, 44 Broadway, E15 1XH. (Three days a week. Two days a week at another community organisation – to be confirmed.)
